Almeyda shows respect for Ramos amid financial rumours as Sevilla prepare for Levante test
Sevilla boss Matías Almeyda addresses squad concerns ahead of Levante clash, while showing admiration for club legend Sergio Ramos despite recent controversies.
Sevilla manager Matías Almeyda has been dealing with a proper winter headache as his squad battles illness and injuries ahead of their first fixture of 2026 against Levante at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán this Sunday.
Squad concerns mounting
The Argentine gaffer revealed several players have been struck down with the flu, while Alfon has suffered yet another setback after feeling discomfort in his soleus muscle during training. The youngster’s development has been repeatedly hampered by injuries.
“It’s a shame because since his arrival he’s had problems with his ankle, then his nose, and we’ve never been able to have him at 100%,” Almeyda explained.
The boss himself will be missing from the touchline due to suspension following his antics at the Bernabéu, with assistant Javi Martínez taking charge.
Ramos situation addressed
When questioned about recent reports concerning Sergio Ramos and potential financial irregularities, Almeyda took the high road, showing tremendous respect for the defensive stalwart:
“I don’t know if it’s real or not, but these are matters I don’t get involved in. Sergio Ramos is a legend at a world level, I respect him as a player and as a man. Regarding what he might do with his finances, I’m not an economist.”
Finding consistency
Despite the challenges, Almeyda believes his side has found some stability after six months of adaptation to Spanish football:
“We’ve found a regularity that we had at times and dropped at others. The system change has benefited the team by giving it a bit more security, but at the same time we’re managing to have more control.”
He emphasized the need to improve finishing and maintain their current trajectory, particularly at home where they need to establish a fortress.
Transfer talk
With the January window open, Almeyda confirmed discussions about potential reinforcements have been ongoing “for some time,” but indicated final decisions would rest with sporting director Antonio Fernández and president José María del Nido Carrasco.
Sevilla fans will be hoping for a proper result against Levante to kick off the new year, though they might need to check who’s actually fit enough to play before getting too excited. Bit of a mare with all these illnesses going around, innit?
