Barrenetxea back in training under Matarazzo, set to feature against Atlético

Real Sociedad winger Ander Barrenetxea has returned to training under new boss Pellegrino Matarazzo after a three-week muscle injury layoff.

Real Sociedad receive a timely boost with Ander Barrenetxea returning to training under new gaffer Pellegrino Matarazzo, putting him in contention for Sunday’s clash against Atlético Madrid at Anoeta.

Back in the fold

The talented number 7 joined his teammates in training this morning for the first time under the Italian-American coach, seemingly recovered from the muscle problem that’s kept him sidelined for three weeks. While he’s likely to start on the bench, his return provides a welcome option for Matarazzo’s first match in charge of the txuriurdin.

Barrenetxea’s absence has been a proper blow for La Real. The local lad hadn’t trained with the squad since the week before the Girona fixture on December 12th, having been nursing a muscle issue for about a month prior. The injury forced him to miss the Copa del Rey trip to Elda and the away league match against Levante.

Ahead of schedule

The Basque attacker showed his commitment by returning to individual training on December 26th, three days before the rest of the squad was due back after Christmas. This early return has paid dividends, as he now appears ready for some involvement this weekend.

There had been doubts about his availability when he wasn’t spotted during Matarazzo’s first session at Zubieta on Monday or in subsequent days. However, the winger has made better progress than expected and could find himself on the teamsheet come Sunday, provided he completes today’s session without setbacks and comes through tomorrow’s final preparations.

New boss, new options

Matarazzo now faces his first selection dilemma since taking the reins at the San Sebastian club. Whether to throw Barrenetxea straight back into the starting lineup or ease him in from the bench will be crucial as the new coach looks to make an immediate impact in what’s a proper baptism of fire against Diego Simeone’s Atlético.

For Real Sociedad supporters, seeing one of their homegrown talents back available will be as welcome as a pint on a Friday night, especially with the new manager looking to implement his ideas in a challenging fixture.
