Catalan ref García Verdura to officiate Barcelona derby in historic appointment

RFEF's push to end territorial restrictions continues as Catalan official gets nod for Espanyol-Barcelona clash, marking another milestone in Spanish refereeing reform.

A Catalan referee will take charge of the Barcelona derby for the first time under new officiating guidelines that are shaking up Spanish football’s old territorial restrictions.

Local ref gets the derby nod

Víctor García Verdura has been appointed to oversee the upcoming RCD Espanyol vs FC Barcelona clash, according to reports from El Partidazo de COPE. The official announcement is expected later this morning, but the selection already represents another significant step in the RFEF’s new refereeing policy.

The appointment continues the bold initiative by Fran Soto’s refereeing committee (CTA) to eliminate the long-standing territorial restrictions that previously prevented officials from overseeing matches involving teams from their home regions.

Breaking with tradition

This season has already witnessed several groundbreaking appointments that would’ve been unthinkable in previous campaigns:

  • Málaga vs Córdoba (LaLiga Hypermotion) was refereed by Sevillian Manuel Orellana Cid
  • The Seville derby between Sevilla and Real Betis was officiated by José Luis Munuera Montero from Jaén
  • This Friday’s Madrid derby between Rayo Vallecano and Getafe will be handled by Madrid’s own Miguel Ángel Ortiz Arias

The territorial barrier hasn’t just been broken for on-field officials. Madrid-born Carlos del Cerro Grande made history as the VAR referee for the Atlético Madrid vs Real Madrid derby back on September 29th.

Saturday’s other officiating appointments

The Barcelona derby kicks off at 21:00 on Saturday, but it’s not the only LaLiga action that day. The full slate of matches and officials includes:

  • 14:00: Celta vs Valencia - De Burgos Bengoetxea
  • 16:15: Osasuna vs Athletic Bilbao - Munuera Montero
  • 18:30: Elche vs Villarreal - Díaz de Mera
  • 21:00: Espanyol vs Barcelona - García Verdura

This appointment is proper revolutionary for Spanish football, and I’m absolutely buzzing to see how García Verdura handles the pressure in what’s always a tasty derby atmosphere. The old guard might have their Barnet fair in a twist about it, but it’s about time Spanish football caught up with the rest of Europe on this front.
