Torres pleads for 'common sense' from La Liga as Getafe's transfer plans hinge on Uche dispute
Getafe president Ángel Torres says the club has funds to spend but faces Financial Fair Play obstacles, with January business dependent on resolving the Uche situation.
Getafe find themselves in a proper pickle this January window, with president Ángel Torres admitting their transfer plans are completely hamstrung by an ongoing Financial Fair Play dispute with La Liga.
Speaking ahead of the Madrid derby against Rayo Vallecano, Torres made it crystal clear that Getafe’s ability to bring in reinforcements this month hinges entirely on resolving their ongoing situation regarding Nigerian forward Uche.
Financial Fair Play headache
Despite having the dosh available, Getafe are currently unable to register new players due to La Liga’s strict financial controls. It’s a right mess that has Torres appealing to the authorities for a bit of common sense.
“We hope common sense prevails in La Liga and we can register players,” Torres explained, stressing that the club has the necessary funds to strengthen the squad this winter.
The president emphasized that any January business is completely dependent on resolving the “Uche conflict” - a situation that appears to be blocking their ability to navigate La Liga’s economic control regulations.
Summer fallout looming
While pushing for an immediate solution, Torres suggested the Uche matter might ultimately drag on until the summer: “What happens with Uche we’ll see in June, and that will be another story.”
This uncertainty leaves manager José Bordalás in a tricky spot as he looks to strengthen his squad for the second half of the season.
Missing out on targets
The registration issues have already cost Getafe potential signings. Torres confirmed they missed out on Carlos Martín, who instead joined their local rivals Rayo Vallecano - the very team they were preparing to face.
The president acknowledged Martín’s quality and suggested that with Getafe currently “short” on options, Bordalás would certainly have welcomed the reinforcement.
With the transfer window now open, Getafe fans will be hoping the club can navigate these bureaucratic obstacles and provide Bordalás with the tools needed to push on in the second half of the campaign.
