Uruguayan striker Borbas joins Oviedo on loan with option to buy
Real Oviedo secure their second winter signing as Thiago Borbas arrives from Red Bull Bragantino to boost their attacking options in La Liga.
Struggling for goals in Spain’s top flight, Real Oviedo have moved swiftly to bolster their attacking options with the loan signing of Uruguayan forward Thiago Borbas from Brazilian side Red Bull Bragantino until the end of the season.
Deal Details
The Asturian club have secured Borbas on a temporary basis until June 30th, with an option to make the move permanent should the striker impress during his stint at the Estadio Carlos Tartiere. The 21-year-old becomes Oviedo’s second winter reinforcement as they look to climb away from danger in La Liga.
Filling Rondón’s Boots
Borbas arrives with the specific task of filling the void left by Salomón Rondón’s departure. It’s a proper tough ask for the young Uruguayan, as he joins a side currently holding the unwanted distinction of being La Liga’s lowest scorers this season. The gaffer Guillermo Almada will be hoping his compatriot can hit the ground running.
Career Path
The Montevideo-born striker cut his teeth at River Plate Montevideo, where he showed his scoring chops with 29 goals in 94 appearances. This impressive return caught the eye of Brazilian outfit Red Bull Bragantino, who brought him to the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A.
During his time in Brazil, Borbas has been a regular feature in attack:
- 134 appearances over nearly three seasons
- 27 goals for the São Paulo-based club
- Established himself as a key attacking option
Playing Style
Borbas isn’t just about goals – he brings intensity and work rate to the table. He’s described as a proper centre-forward who grafts without the ball, pressing from the front and contributing to the team’s defensive efforts. These attributes apparently caught Almada’s eye and convinced him to bring his fellow Uruguayan to northern Spain.
With three caps for the Uruguay national team already under his belt despite his young age, Borbas brings international experience that should add some much-needed quality and competitive edge to the Oviedo dressing room.
