Almada admits Oviedo need attacking reinforcements: 'We're lacking pieces up top'

Real Oviedo's manager speaks candidly about transfer needs, squad status and the challenge of facing Alavés in his pre-match press conference.

Real Oviedo boss Guillermo Almada has laid his cards on the table ahead of their trip to Vitoria, making it crystal clear the club needs attacking reinforcements during the January window.

Squad Status and Injuries

The straight-talking Uruguayan confirmed two players would miss the Alavés clash:

“Vidal and Ejaria are ruled out,” he stated, before turning attention to his new arrivals who find themselves at different stages of readiness.

Thiago Borbas arrives short of match fitness: “He’s barely been able to train since the Brazilian championship ended, so we’ll need to prepare him properly.” Meanwhile, Nico Fonseca appears closer to immediate involvement having completed preseason training elsewhere.

Transfer Philosophy

Almada defended the club’s recruitment strategy, acknowledging financial constraints while expressing confidence in the profile of players being targeted.

“The club has certain economic parameters we must operate within. These are young players with tremendous potential that I’m familiar with. I believe they can give us something extra,” he explained.

Tactical Evolution

The gaffer made no bones about wanting more time to implement his ideas, revealing his preference for a higher-intensity style than what Oviedo have shown thus far.

“I would’ve liked to be here from the start of the season. I prefer playing with different intensity and rhythm,” he admitted, while praising his squad’s attitude: “The players’ disposition has been absolutely brilliant.”

January Shopping List

When pressed on transfer targets, Almada didn’t beat around the bush about what the team needs:

“Especially in the offensive zone, we’re lacking pieces and characteristics this squad doesn’t have,” he stated candidly. “The club and ownership are looking for them, and we’re in constant communication.”

This admission comes as bread and butter for Oviedo supporters who’ve watched their team struggle for goals this season.

Alavés Respect

Almada showed proper respect for their upcoming opponents and their manager.

“Alavés is a solid team with a clear identity. They’ll demand significant effort from us, especially at their ground,” he noted, adding that he’s familiar with his counterpart: “I know Chacho Coudet quite well, I understand his ideas and he has a solid track record.”

Forward Options

The manager revealed plans to take a closer look at young striker Joaquín Delgado, while suggesting Álex Forés might be on his way out. Regarding Salomón Rondón’s departure, Almada explained the decision had been made before his arrival.

Oviedo fans will be watching closely to see if the club can deliver the attacking reinforcements their manager clearly believes are necessary.
