Íñigo Pérez at rock bottom after Rayo's last-gasp heartbreak
Rayo Vallecano's winless streak extends to eight matches as Getafe snatch a 91st-minute equaliser, leaving manager Íñigo Pérez struggling to cope with the disappointment.
Gutted gaffer admits he’s struggling to process another crushing blow as Rayo’s winless run stretches to two months.
Eight games without a win
Rayo Vallecano boss Íñigo Pérez was left absolutely devastated after watching his side concede a 91st-minute equaliser against Getafe, extending their winless run in La Liga to a worrying eight matches.
Mauro Arambarri’s last-gasp strike for Getafe left Pérez looking proper down in the dumps during his post-match comments, with the manager admitting: “It’s a difficult day to accept.”
The Rayo manager seemed genuinely shell-shocked, revealing he was struggling to process what happened and needed time to clear his head. You could see the bloke was absolutely gutted - it was written all over his boat race.
Tactical frustrations
What makes the late equaliser even more painful for Pérez is that he’d specifically warned his players about Arambarri’s threat from deep positions just moments before the Uruguayan struck. Talk about rubbing salt in the wound!
Pérez wasn’t in the mood to pat himself on the back for spotting the danger, though:
“I’m not looking for medals here. I’m just trying to help the players with what I see. But right now I’m not feeling good at all.”
The first half had gone somewhat according to plan for Rayo, who managed to create chances despite facing Getafe’s notoriously stubborn defence. They eventually got their reward with a goal, but the second half collapse will require serious analysis from the coaching staff.
New signing and next match
Amid the disappointment, Pérez did touch on the arrival of Carlos Martín, who joins on loan from Atlético Madrid until the end of the season. The striker was nearly involved against Getafe but bureaucratic issues prevented his inclusion.
With the transfer being one they’d originally pursued last summer, Pérez emphasized that maintaining their La Liga status remains the primary objective this season.
Rayo now face a quick turnaround with a crucial match against Granada looming, giving Pérez little time to dwell on this setback - perhaps a blessing in disguise given his current state of mind.
