Javi Sánchez cuts ties with Valladolid for Portuguese adventure with Arouca

The Madrid-born defender ends his four-and-a-half year spell at Real Valladolid after 124 appearances, heading to Portugal's Arouca as a free agent.

After four-and-a-half years and 124 official appearances in the white and violet, Javi Sánchez has called time on his Real Valladolid career, with the Portuguese top-flight beckoning.

From Madrid to Valladolid to Portugal

The central defender, who joined Valladolid from Real Madrid’s academy system in the summer of 2019, has terminated his contract with the Segunda División outfit by mutual consent. The club announced the departure of one of their captains just hours before their match against Racing at the José Zorrilla.

Sánchez is now set for a new chapter in his career, with all signs pointing toward Portuguese side Arouca as his next destination. Only minor details remain to be ironed out before the 26-year-old puts pen to paper on a deal that will see him arrive in Portugal as a free agent.

Fading from view

The defender’s departure comes after a significant reduction in his playing time this season. Once a mainstay in the Valladolid backline, Sánchez had been limited to just three appearances in the current campaign, finding himself well down the pecking order.

For the Madrid-born centre-back, the move represents a chance to reignite his career after gradually becoming a bit of a spare part at Valladolid. The Portuguese Primeira Liga offers a fresh start and regular football – something that was becoming as rare as hen’s teeth for him back in Castile and León.

What next for both parties?

For Arouca, they’re getting an experienced defender who has competed at both La Liga and Segunda División level, while still being in his prime years. For Valladolid, they’ve moved on a player who was clearly no longer in their plans while freeing up some wage budget as they push for promotion back to Spain’s top flight.

The departure marks the end of a significant chapter for both club and player, with Sánchez having been part of both relegation and promotion campaigns during his time at the José Zorrilla.
