Almada bullish despite setback: 'We deserved to win and this is the way forward'

Real Oviedo boss remains optimistic despite frustrating result, praising team's growth while lamenting missed chances and controversial decisions.

Real Oviedo manager Guillermo Almada remains convinced his side are on the right track despite another frustrating result that left him feeling hard done by.

Performance over points

The gaffer was in reflective mood post-match, clearly gutted about dropping points in a game where his troops created enough chances to nick all three. Despite the disappointment, Almada’s glass remains half-full rather than half-empty.

“We deserved the victory for what we did in the match,” Almada insisted, highlighting the clear-cut opportunities his side created. The boss reckons his philosophy is already taking root despite his relatively short time at the helm.

Finishing woes continue

Lack of cutting edge in the final third continues to be Oviedo’s Achilles heel. The team’s performance was largely convincing, but as any football fan knows, it’s goals that win games, not expected goals or pretty patterns of play.

Almada acknowledged the anxiety affecting his players in front of goal - a common issue for teams struggling near the bottom. The psychological burden of needing results can make even the simplest finish seem like brain surgery.

Referee in the spotlight

The manager didn’t shy away from criticizing the officials, particularly regarding two decisions he felt went against his side:

  • A free-kick against Federico that Almada felt wasn’t a foul
  • Another against Sibo which the boss argued was legitimate contact

“Football is a contact sport,” he reminded everyone, clearly peeved that these decisions had gone against his team in crucial moments.

Debutant impresses

There was a silver lining with Nico Fonseca making his debut for Oviedo. Almada praised the newcomer’s personality and work-rate, suggesting he’ll be a valuable asset as the season progresses.

Squad commitment

When pressed on potential January departures, Almada was adamant: he’s counting on everyone. The only exception would be if a player explicitly wanted out - he won’t force anyone to stay against their will.

The manager wrapped things up with a rallying cry to the supporters, acknowledging their importance in helping the team climb the table. “To get out of this situation, we need our people,” he said, hoping to reward their loyalty with victories in the coming weeks.

It’s early days in Almada’s tenure, but the bread and butter will be turning these promising performances into points on the board. Otherwise, it’ll be a proper nightmare for the Oviedo faithful.
