Cruel blow for Valladolid as Guille Bueno ruled out for the season with devastating knee injury

The former Dortmund defender faces at least nine months on the sidelines after suffering triple knee damage in Valladolid's draw against Racing.

Valladolid’s hopes for promotion have taken a massive hit with left-back Guille Bueno set to miss the remainder of the season after suffering a catastrophic knee injury.

Triple knee blow confirms worst fears

The treatment room at Real Valladolid was already getting a bit crowded as the new year kicked off, but things have gone from bad to worse following their draw against Racing. Guille Bueno, who joined from Borussia Dortmund, had to be stretchered off just 20 minutes into the match after suffering what looked a nasty one from the get-go.

Initial examinations suggested something serious was afoot, and Sunday’s comprehensive tests revealed the full horror show:

  • Complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament
  • Sprain of the medial collateral ligament
  • Meniscal damage

All this damage to his left knee means the Galician defender is looking at a minimum nine-month spell on the sidelines following surgery. It’s not just curtains for this season – he’ll be missing the start of the next campaign too. Proper gutted for the lad.

Massive loss for promotion-chasing Valladolid

Bueno had been absolutely crucial for the Pucela this term, racking up nearly 1,500 minutes across 18 appearances. He’d only missed two games all season, underlining his importance to the blanquivioletas’ setup. His absence is even more problematic given that his positional rival, Iván Garriel, is also in the treatment room, though admittedly nearing a return.

When Bueno went down against Racing, manager Tevenet had to call on academy product Hugo San, who did a decent job stepping in. But let’s be honest, losing your first-choice left-back for the season is a proper kick in the Hampstead Heath.

January shopping needed

With this devastating blow, Valladolid’s sporting directors will now be scouring the January transfer market for reinforcements in that left-back position. What was looking like a strong promotion push might need some emergency DIY in the transfer window to keep things on track.

The injury overshadowed what was already a frustrating match against Racing, where a controversial penalty allowed the league leaders to maintain their position at the summit.
