Valladolid's touching tribute to young fan Rodri leaves José Zorrilla in tears
Real Valladolid players and fans united in an emotional tribute to recently deceased young supporter Rodrigo Alonso during Saturday's match against Racing.
Players, fans and even opposition supporters came together in a heart-wrenching display of football’s true spirit at the José Zorrilla on Saturday.
A stadium stands as one
The match between Real Valladolid and Racing Santander took a poignant turn as the home side paid tribute to Rodrigo Alonso, known affectionately as Rodri, a young Valladolid supporter who recently passed away after a long illness.
Before kickoff, Stanko Jurić represented the club in a moving gesture, placing flowers on Rodri’s season ticket seat and presenting a personalised number 7 shirt – the lad’s favourite number – to his grieving family: father Raúl, mother Cristina, and brother Mario.
The entire stadium rose as one, with supporters from both sides joining in a round of applause to honour the young fan’s memory. It was proper emotional stuff, with the Valladolid players leaving their warm-up to participate in the tribute from the pitch.
Captain’s special connection
Club captain Iván Alejo was visibly moved during the ceremony, and for good reason. Alejo had formed a special bond with young Rodri, previously inviting him into the dressing room to meet the entire squad. The pair had even walked out onto the pitch together hand-in-hand before a previous match against Las Palmas.
The tributes didn’t end with the pre-match ceremony. When the clock hit the 7-minute mark – representing Rodri’s favourite shirt number – the entire stadium broke into another round of spontaneous applause.
Football family united
What makes this story particularly touching is how Rodri continued to support his beloved Valladolid even during the most challenging periods of his illness, still making trips to the José Zorrilla whenever possible.
