Mbappé cruising in Pichichi race despite injury layoff
Real Madrid's French forward maintains comfortable lead in La Liga scoring charts, while Courtois leads Zamora Trophy race for best goalkeeper.
Despite being sidelined through injury this weekend, Kylian Mbappé’s Pichichi Trophy ambitions remain firmly on track with the Frenchman enjoying a commanding lead at the top of La Liga’s scoring charts.
Pichichi Trophy race
The Real Madrid striker has been absolutely mustard since arriving in Spain, bagging an impressive 18 goals in La Liga so far. His nearest challenger, Barcelona’s Ferran Torres, is lagging well behind on 11 goals - and the Spaniard failed to add to his tally this weekend.
Mallorca’s Muriqi rounds out the top three with 10 goals to his name, with the big man finding the net in his side’s defeat to Girona.
Mbappé’s dominance in his debut Spanish season shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone with half a brain. The Frenchman has taken to La Liga like a duck to water, showing why Los Blancos were so desperate to bring him to the Bernabéu after his Paris exit.
Zamora Trophy situation
Meanwhile, in the Zamora Trophy race for the league’s top goalkeeper:
- Thibaut Courtois (Real Madrid) leads with a coefficient of 0.89, conceding 17 goals in 19 matches
- Jan Oblak (Atlético Madrid) sits in third with a coefficient of 0.94, letting in 17 goals but in 18 appearances
- Unai Simón (Athletic Club) holds second spot with a 1.32 coefficient after conceding 25 goals in 19 games
Courtois’s numbers are proper impressive, especially considering his injury troubles last season. The Belgian’s been in blinding form between the sticks for Madrid.
Segunda División battles
Down in Spain’s second tier, we’ve got a right old three-way tie for the Pichichi, with Racing Santander duo Andrés Martín and Asier Villalibre level with Almería’s Sergio Arribas on 10 goals each.
The Zamora race in Segunda is equally tight, with Burgos keeper Cantero and Valladolid’s Guilherme Fernandes sharing top spot with identical 1.0 coefficients (20 goals conceded in 20 matches).
Cádiz’s Aznar and Leganés stopper Juan Soriano are just behind with 1.05 coefficients after shipping 21 goals in their 20 appearances.
As things stand, it’s looking like Mbappé will be taking home the bacon in the scoring charts unless someone goes on an absolute tear in the second half of the season. The Frenchman’s consistency has been top drawer, and even with this weekend’s absence, his lead looks safer than houses.
