Sporting duo Cortés and Caicedo train alone as exit looms

The Gijón club has sidelined Jordy Caicedo and Oscar Cortés from first-team training as they work to offload both players during the January transfer window.

Two Sporting Gijón players have been given the old Spanish cold shoulder as the club makes it crystal clear they’re surplus to requirements in the January window.

Jordy Caicedo and Oscar Cortés were notably absent from first-team training on Monday, instead working separately as the club actively seeks to offload them this month.

Disappointing Loan Spells

Both players arrived at Sporting with some fanfare but have fallen well short of expectations during their loan stints in Gijón. They’ve been reduced to bit-part roles in the squad and were completely unused in the team’s first match of 2026 against Málaga.

While both face the exit door, their situations differ significantly:

  • Jordy Caicedo: The Ecuadorian forward is on loan from Mexican side Atlas, which, like Sporting, is managed by Grupo Orlegi. His departure is likely to come via contract termination, with his six-month arrangement at both clubs set to be cut short. There appears to be no future for him at either club beyond June 30th.

  • Oscar Cortés: The Colombian’s situation is more complex. On loan from Scottish side Rangers (where he also featured earlier this season), FIFA regulations restrict his options. Having already played for two clubs this season, he can only join a third if it’s in a league that operates on a January-December calendar rather than the typical European July-June schedule.

Limited Options for Cortés

This calendar restriction severely limits Cortés’s potential destinations. His most viable options lie in:

  • North American leagues (Mexico, USA)
  • South American competitions
  • Scandinavian or Baltic European leagues

These are the few competitions that follow the calendar-year format required by FIFA regulations.

While no immediate departures are expected, the club’s decision to separate both players from the main squad represents a clear statement of intent. The pair will continue working alone at the Mareo training complex while Sporting negotiates their exits.
