Valencia's January transfer window: Meriton dragging their heels despite Balaídos disaster
Valencia's desperate need for reinforcements highlighted by 4-1 thrashing at Celta, but Lim's Meriton appears reluctant to act quickly in the January window.
Valencia find themselves in desperate need of reinforcements, but Meriton’s traditional January window reluctance is already causing friction despite their precarious league position.
Slow out of the blocks
While the January transfer window is now officially open, there’s a stark contrast between Valencia’s approach this season compared to last. The club’s technical staff have identified clear needs, but insiders suggest we’re in for a “long journey” with 25 days of the window remaining.
Last January, with the club in the relegation zone, Meriton broke with tradition and moved quickly, bringing in Sadiq during the first week of the window. This time around, despite similar urgency, the Singapore-based ownership appears to be dragging their feet.
However, the recent 4-1 hammering at Balaídos might force a rethink. That result brutally exposed the squad’s limitations and showed the problems run deeper than mere form issues.
The striker conundrum
Valencia desperately need a physical, goalscoring centre-forward – the missing piece that’s severely limited their tactical flexibility in the first half of the season. The technical staff have identified this as the priority position, with the team’s attacking play becoming predictable without a proper number nine.
Sadiq remains the primary target, but negotiations with Real Sociedad are proving difficult:
- Valencia prefer a loan with future purchase option
- Meriton reluctant to commit to a deal potentially exceeding €10m when including transfer fee, wages and a three-year contract
- Singapore executives raising concerns about the striker’s age (29 in February) and previous knee surgery
The ownership would approve a deal at a “reasonable price without long-term commitments” – but such negotiations take time, a luxury Valencia can’t afford in their current predicament.
Alternative options
As the window progresses, Valencia may activate other targets if the Sadiq deal stalls. Satriano is one alternative being considered, with several other physical striker profiles on their shortlist.
The clock is ticking at Mestalla, and with each passing day, the pressure mounts on both the technical staff and Meriton to deliver the reinforcements needed to secure their top-flight status.
