Fitness coach exodus continues at La Real as Casamichana walks after eight years

David Casamichana, who survived the transition from Imanol to Sergio Francisco, has now left Real Sociedad as new boss Matarazzo reshapes his backroom staff.

Real Sociedad’s backroom reshuffle continues as long-serving fitness coach David Casamichana has called time on his spell at the Basque club after eight years of service.

Casamichana, who was a key member of Imanol Alguacil’s staff during his tenure at the helm, had initially stayed on when Sergio Francisco took the reins. However, he’s now decided to part ways with the txuriurdin just as American manager Pellegrino Matarazzo attempts to steady the ship.

The club has wasted no time in finding a replacement, promoting from within by appointing Oier Agirrezabalaga, who’s been grafting away in the youth setup. Agirrezabalaga is no stranger to the first-team environment, having previously worked with both Imanol and the highly-rated Xabi Alonso during their time with Real Sociedad B (Sanse).

More departures

Casamichana isn’t the only one heading for the exit door. Felipe Sánchez Mateos, who only joined last summer as a first-team assistant, has also decided his future lies elsewhere.

It’s been a proper rollercoaster for La Real’s coaching setup this season:

  • Imanol Alguacil’s surprise departure after years of stability
  • Brief Sergio Francisco interim period
  • Matarazzo’s appointment raising eyebrows
  • Now multiple backroom staff changes

For Matarazzo, these changes represent both a challenge and an opportunity as he looks to put his stamp on a squad that’s struggled to find consistency this campaign. The American gaffer will be hoping these behind-the-scenes tweaks help get his bread and butter sorted on the pitch.
