Valencia hit by persistent flu bug as Jesús Vázquez becomes latest casualty
Illness continues to plague Valencia's squad with Ugrinic still testing positive and Vázquez now showing symptoms ahead of crucial Elche clash
Valencia’s preparations continue to be hampered by a stubborn flu outbreak that refuses to leave the dressing room at Mestalla.
Flu bug refuses to budge
The virus that affected the squad during recent away trips to Atlético Madrid and Celta Vigo has struck again at a crucial time for Los Che. Filip Ugrinic and Jesús Vázquez were both absent from Tuesday’s training session (January 6th) as the team prepares for Saturday’s match against Elche.
Ugrinic’s situation is particularly frustrating for Carlos Corberán’s side. The Swiss midfielder:
- Already missed the Celta match due to flu
- Is now nearly symptom-free but still testing positive
- Has been kept away from teammates as a precaution
- Had seemingly earned a starting spot after the Metropolitano match
Vázquez, meanwhile, is showing more obvious symptoms including fever and general discomfort, with the medical staff recommending he rest at home.
Growing list of affected players
The persistence of this illness is becoming a proper headache for the gaffer. Several players have been struck down in recent weeks, both before and after the Christmas break:
- Captain José Luis Gayà arrived physically diminished
- Luis Rioja also struggled with symptoms
- Pepelu, Hugo Duro and Javi Guerra were previously affected
While Guerra has managed to rejoin group training, the technical staff are increasingly concerned about the ongoing spread of the virus throughout the squad.
Additional selection woes
Corberán’s team sheet for Saturday is looking thinner than a supermodel on a diet. Beyond the flu issues, Valencia will be without:
- Hugo Duro through suspension
- Agirrezabala with a muscle tear (6-8 weeks)
- Diakhaby also sidelined with a similar injury (6-8 weeks)
On the bright side, Comert and Dimitrievski are fit and available for selection as Valencia prepare for the January 10th clash against Elche.
