Cádiz closing in on Oier Luengo loan deal to shore up defensive woes

The Yellow Submarine are eyeing Real Oviedo's versatile centre-back Oier Luengo in a January loan move with purchase option as Garitano looks to climb the Segunda table.

Cádiz CF are making swift moves in the January window, with Real Oviedo defender Oier Luengo emerging as their top defensive target to bolster Gaizka Garitano’s backline options.

Defensive reinforcement incoming

The Andalusian outfit have stepped on the gas to secure the Basque defender’s signature on what would be a loan deal with a purchase option. Having lost his starting berth at Oviedo due to fierce competition for places, Luengo is reportedly keen on a move to the Nuevo Mirandilla stadium.

What makes Luengo particularly appealing to Cádiz is his versatility - the lad can slot in at both centre-back and right-back positions. His aerial prowess would add some much-needed solidity to a defence that’s been shipping goals like there’s no tomorrow this season.

Experience where it matters

The Vizcaya-born defender brings proper pedigree to the table, having racked up more than 60 appearances over recent campaigns. He’s developed quite the reputation as:

  • A reliable defensive presence
  • A goal threat from set-pieces
  • A player with extensive Segunda División know-how

Luengo was a key cog in the Oviedo side that came within a whisker of promotion not long ago, and that experience could be worth its weight in gold for a Cádiz team looking to climb the table in the second half of the season.

Transfer race

Cádiz aren’t the only ones with their mince pies on Luengo, mind you. They’ll need to fend off interest from other clubs, with Albacete reportedly among the suitors for his signature.

For the “Little Silver Cup” side, beating their rivals to Luengo’s signature would represent a proper statement of intent. They’d be adding a defender who’s match-fit and ready to hit the ground running - absolutely crucial for the demanding second half of the campaign as they look to sort their defensive troubles and make a push up the Segunda División table.
