Miguel Román forces his way into Celta's first team plans

The Celta Vigo academy graduate has become a mainstay in Claudio Giráldez's midfield, starting the last five La Liga matches despite limited early-season opportunities.

Celta Vigo’s homegrown talent Miguel Román has quietly established himself as a crucial cog in Claudio Giráldez’s ever-changing lineups, starting the last five league matches on the bounce.

From fringe player to midfield mainstay

The transformation in Román’s fortunes this season has been nothing short of remarkable. The numbers tell a proper story:

  • Featured in just 2 of Celta’s first 11 league games
  • Has since played in all 8 subsequent La Liga matches
  • Accumulated 1,024 minutes across 16 appearances in all competitions
  • Netted once in his 10 La Liga appearances
  • Played in Celta’s last 4 Europa League fixtures
  • Featured in two Copa del Rey ties

What’s particularly impressive is that Román now sits second among Celta’s central midfielders for minutes played this season, trailing only Ilaix Moriba. He’s leapfrogged established options like Fran Beltrán and Hugo Sotelo in the pecking order, while Damián has been shipped out on loan to Racing Santander.

Giráldez’s faith rewarded

It’s no coincidence that Román’s breakthrough has come under Giráldez, who knows the midfielder inside out from their time in the youth setup. The gaffer clearly rates him, and the youngster’s performances have justified that faith.

The club demonstrated their own belief in the academy product last summer by tying him down to a new contract running until 2028. After making his first-team debut in a Copa del Rey match against UD San Pedro in October 2024, he’s now officially part of the senior squad and looking every bit the part.

Román’s rapid rise is a proper Bobby Dazzler for Celta supporters who’ve been crying out for more academy success stories. If he maintains this trajectory, the sky’s the limit for the Spanish midfielder.
