Córdoba's Fomeyem undergoes surgery on troublesome ankle issue

Cameroon defender Franck Fomeyem faces extended spell on the sidelines after surgery to address bone edema in his left ankle following November injury.

Córdoba’s defensive stalwart Franck Fomeyem is set for a longer spell on the treatment table after undergoing surgery to address a bone edema in his left ankle.

Breaking from tradition

In an unusual move, Córdoba CF released a medical update on Friday regarding their centre-back’s condition. The club typically keeps its cards close to its chest about injured players, but clearly felt the need to brief supporters on Fomeyem’s situation.

The Cameroon international has been sidelined since November 16th when he picked up the ankle knock against Deportivo. What initially seemed like a standard ankle sprain has proven far more complicated.

The procedure

According to the club statement, Fomeyem underwent a minor surgical procedure to address a bone edema in his left ankle. The operation was performed by Córdoba’s medical staff as part of his ongoing recovery process, which they describe as “progressing favorably” despite the setback.

The club explained that the defender continues to make positive progress following the injury suffered against Deportivo on matchday 14, which affected the ankle’s ligament complex. However, in typical football club fashion, they’ve avoided providing any concrete timeline for his return, simply stating that “the player’s evolution will determine his return to the pitch.”

Longer absence than expected

Fomeyem was spotted doing light training separately from the main group during last week’s open training session at El Arcángel stadium. However, the length of his absence had already raised eyebrows among supporters, even accounting for a severe ankle sprain.

The reality is now clear - the defender will miss significantly more than the six matches he’s already been absent for. It’s a proper blow for Córdoba, considering Fomeyem had been an absolute fixture in the starting XI:

  • Started all 14 league matches before his injury
  • Completed the full 90 minutes in 12 of those games

With this surgical intervention, Córdoba will need to soldier on without one of their defensive rocks for the foreseeable future. It’s a right old kick in the Hampstead Heath for their promotion aspirations in Segunda División.
