Denis Cheryshev's career in limbo: 'I haven't lost my passion'
The former Real Madrid and Valencia winger is currently without a club after leaving Greek side Panionios, but remains hopeful of finding a new opportunity this transfer window.
Former Real Madrid and Valencia winger Denis Cheryshev finds himself in career limbo at 33, waiting for his next opportunity after departing Greek second division side Panionios last summer.
Productive Greek stint
The Russian international’s time in Greece may have been brief, but it was certainly productive. During his 1,256 minutes on the pitch for Panionios, Cheryshev racked up some impressive numbers:
- 5 goals (including a hat-trick in cup competition against Panserraikos)
- 5 assists
Despite his contributions, Panionios fell short in the promotion playoffs, and Cheryshev bid farewell to the club in June with a heartfelt social media message thanking supporters.
Six months in the wilderness
Since leaving Greece, Cheryshev has maintained a low profile. His Instagram has been dormant, and despite being free to sign with any club as an unattached player, no move has materialised.
The 33-year-old now hopes the January transfer window might bring fresh opportunities to restart his career, which has previously taken him to some of Spain’s biggest clubs as well as Italy’s Venezia.
Still hungry for football
“I’m in Madrid, at home, in a kind of stand-by, waiting to see what options there are to continue,” Cheryshev told Radio MARCA in November. “For now, I haven’t lost my passion for football.”
The 33-cap Russian international clearly has a soft spot for Spanish football, where he made 163 appearances across stints with Real Madrid, Sevilla, Villarreal and Valencia, contributing 12 goals and 21 assists.
While Spain remains his preferred destination, Cheryshev isn’t closing doors. “There’s no place like Spain, but I’m open to everything,” he admitted.
For a player who once lit up the 2018 World Cup with four goals for Russia, there’s surely still some gas left in the tank. The question is: which club will take a punt on the experienced winger this January?
