Sporting Gijón cut short Jordy Caicedo's loan spell as striker heads for Argentina

The Ecuadorian international departs El Molinón after failing to impress, with Huracán his likely destination alongside teammate Oscar Cortés.

Sporting Gijón have wasted no time in the January transfer window, making their first move by terminating Jordy Caicedo’s loan deal early as they look to reshape their squad for a promotion push.

Caicedo’s disappointing stint ends

The Ecuadorian international forward has been shown the door after a thoroughly underwhelming spell at El Molinón. Sporting have cut short his season-long loan from Mexican side Atlas, bringing an end to what can only be described as a proper nightmare for all parties involved.

Caicedo’s return to Asturias last summer raised a few eyebrows among the Sporting faithful, especially after his previous uninspiring stint with the club. The striker failed to turn things around this time as well, making just 13 appearances across league and Copa del Rey fixtures without making any significant impact.

Argentine adventure beckons

While not officially confirmed yet, all signs point to Caicedo heading to Argentine side Huracán for the remainder of the season. What’s particularly interesting is that he might not be making the journey to Buenos Aires alone.

Reports suggest Oscar Cortés, currently on loan at Sporting from Glasgow Rangers, could also be on his way to Huracán. Neither player was involved in the squad’s preparations for the upcoming match against Cádiz, adding fuel to the transfer speculation.

Sporting’s transfer strategy

Caicedo’s departure appears to be just the first step in Sporting’s January transfer plans. Manager Borja Jiménez has ambitious targets for the club, and the squad needs strengthening to achieve them.

The rojiblancos have already secured the services of Brian Oliván before the transfer window officially opened, but they’re not stopping there. Their shopping list includes:

  • A high-quality striker to bolster their attacking options
  • A wide player to add creativity from the flanks
  • Defensive reinforcement to shore up the backline

Despite decent performances from Dubasin, Gelabert and Juan Otero, Sporting believe they need additional firepower to climb up the Segunda División table and challenge for promotion. Clearing out underperforming players like Caicedo creates both the squad space and financial flexibility to make these crucial additions.

As they say in the transfer game, sometimes you need to clear the dead wood before you can bring in the top banana. Sporting have started that process, and their supporters will be watching closely to see who comes through the door next.
