Cucho's self-criticism after Betis stalemate: 'We only reacted in the final 10 minutes'
Betis forward Cucho Hernández offered a brutally honest assessment after his side's disappointing draw against relegation-threatened Oviedo.
Despite being named Man of the Match, Cucho Hernández didn’t hold back in criticising Betis’ performance in their latest disappointing result against a relegation-threatened side.
Too little, too late
The Colombian striker was in no mood to sugar-coat things after Betis could only manage a draw against Oviedo, continuing their bizarre inability to beat teams in the drop zone. That’s now four draws from four matches against relegation candidates - a proper mare for a side with European ambitions.
“The match lasted 90 minutes and we reacted in the last 10,” Cucho lamented post-match, pinpointing exactly where it all went Pete Tong for the Verdiblancos.
Despite hitting the woodwork twice himself and nearly inspiring a late comeback, Cucho was more concerned with the team’s mentality than his own near-misses. The draw means Betis missed a golden opportunity to close the gap on fifth place.
Missed opportunities
The match followed a frustratingly familiar pattern for Betis:
- Created several decent chances early on but failed to convert
- Conceded from Oviedo’s first clear opportunity
- Left themselves too much to do in the closing stages
- Salvaged a point but dropped two more in the race for Europe
“We had several options but couldn’t finish them. And they scored with their first clear chance - that’s football,” Cucho explained. “If you don’t take your chances, you get punished, and that made things complicated for us.”
The bigger picture
The result continues a worrying trend for Betis, who’ve now drawn all four matches against teams in the relegation zone this season. For a side with European aspirations, these are the games they simply must win.
Cucho’s honest assessment highlights the mentality issue that seems to plague Betis against lower opposition - reacting only when they’re already behind rather than imposing themselves from the first whistle.
Despite the disappointment, the Colombian did find a silver lining: “Looking at the positives, saving a point away from home is good. We wanted all three, but it wasn’t our day.”
