Araújo back in Barça squad after month-long absence
Barcelona defender Ronald Araújo returns to the bench for the Supercopa final, his first appearance in the squad since December's Champions League disaster against Chelsea.
Barcelona receive a timely boost as Ronald Araújo makes his return to the matchday squad for the Supercopa de España final, ending a month-long absence from first-team duties.
Back in the fold
The Uruguayan defender hasn’t been seen in a Barcelona shirt since that nightmare showing against Chelsea in the Champions League back in early December. The club confirmed his inclusion among the substitutes when they announced the starting lineup for today’s showpiece final.
That European night at Stamford Bridge turned into a proper mare for Araújo, who saw red as Barça collapsed to a 3-0 defeat. The centre-back faced a barrage of criticism after his dismissal, with many unfairly pinning the entire defeat on his shoulders.
Self-imposed exile
What’s particularly interesting about Araújo’s absence is that it appears to have been somewhat self-determined. Following discussions with the coaching staff after the Chelsea debacle, the defender essentially removed himself from the first-team picture and stopped training with his teammates.
It wasn’t your typical injury layoff - more a case of a player taking time away to reset mentally after being made the fall guy for a disappointing team performance.
Post-Christmas return
Araújo only rejoined first-team training after the Christmas break, gradually working his way back into contention. While he wasn’t deemed ready for the Athletic Club match, his return to the bench signals he’s now available for selection again.
His comeback provides a welcome defensive option for a Barcelona side that has looked somewhat vulnerable at the back in recent weeks. Whether he’ll get minutes in the final remains to be seen, but having a player of his calibre available again is a significant plus for the Catalan giants.
The timing couldn’t be better as Barça enter a crucial period of their season across multiple competitions. For Araújo personally, it’s a chance to put that Chelsea nightmare firmly in his locker and remind everyone why he’s considered one of the club’s defensive cornerstones.
