Double penalty drama at Butarque as Leganés edge ahead of Valladolid
A bizarre VAR-assisted double penalty incident in the early minutes gave Leganés the advantage over Real Valladolid in their Segunda División clash.
A proper barmy sequence of events unfolded at Butarque, with Segunda División serving up the kind of drama that would make even the Premier League blush.
Double penalty madness
Just five minutes into the Leganés-Valladolid clash, referee Manuel Orellana was summoned to the VAR monitor for what would become the most peculiar passage of play you’re likely to see all season.
The initial call was for a handball by Iván Alejo of Valladolid. After reviewing the footage, Orellana pointed to the spot, giving Leganés their first penalty opportunity of the match.
Juan Cruz stepped up for the hosts, employing the old paradinha technique to try and fool goalkeeper Guilherme. The keeper wasn’t having any of it though, and managed to save Cruz’s effort.
But that’s when things went from standard to downright bonkers!
In the immediate aftermath of the save, Valladolid’s Mohamed Jaouab made a desperate attempt to clear the rebound, but instead clattered into Cruz with what officials deemed a reckless challenge.
The referee was once again called to the monitor by VAR officials, and after a second review, awarded Leganés another penalty for the foul on Cruz - all within the same phase of play!
This time, it was Álex Millán who took responsibility from the spot, and unlike his teammate, he made no mistake, slotting home to give Leganés a 1-0 lead.
Segunda División: Never a dull moment
This chaotic sequence perfectly encapsulates why Spain’s second tier - LaLiga Hypermotion as it’s officially known - has become such a treasure trove for football purists. You simply never know what you’re going to get.
The double penalty incident will surely go down as one of the most unusual moments of the season, leaving Valladolid players with their heads in their hands and the Butarque faithful in raptures.
It’s the kind of drama that makes you glad you didn’t pop down the rub-a-dub instead of watching the match!
