Racing's bizarre 'bottom-dweller curse' strikes again

Racing Santander's peculiar habit of losing to teams at the bottom of the table continues despite their strong league position as winter champions.

Racing Santander somehow manage to be both brilliant and baffling at the exact same time, continuing their strange habit of losing to the league’s bottom clubs despite sitting pretty at the top of Segunda División.

The curse strikes again

Before the Racing-Zaragoza match kicked off, Zaragoza had just fallen to dead last in the table after Mirandés grabbed a point against Almería. And wouldn’t you know it - another bottom club visits El Sardinero and walks away with all three points. It’s getting beyond a joke now.

This isn’t just a one-off either. It’s becoming a proper pattern for the Cantabrian side:

  • Earlier this season, Cultural Leonesa arrived at El Sardinero as the division’s basement boys and somehow smashed Racing 2-4
  • Last season, already-relegated bottom side Cartagena nicked a 1-0 win against them
  • In the 2023-24 campaign finale, Racing only needed a draw against relegated Villarreal B to make the promotion playoffs - and lost 1-0

Cup distraction?

Perhaps the players had their minds on Thursday’s massive Copa del Rey clash against Barcelona rather than focusing on Zaragoza. But whatever the excuse, this bizarre tendency to roll over against the division’s strugglers is becoming a proper Achilles heel.

The silver lining? Despite this peculiar weakness, Racing finish the first half of the season as “winter champions” with 38 points - identical to their tally at the same stage last campaign.

If they could just sort out this strange mental block against the division’s strugglers, they’d be absolute mustard. As it stands, they’re giving their supporters the right old rabbit and pork with these inexplicable performances against the bottom clubs.
