Valencia players need police escort after Elche draw as Mestalla faithful turn on Corberán

Tensions boiled over after Valencia's 1-1 draw with Elche, with fans protesting against the players, manager and owner Peter Lim as relegation fears grow.

The situation at Valencia has gone from bad to worse as players required police protection to leave Mestalla following their disappointing 1-1 draw with Elche. Despite snatching a late equaliser in the 88th minute, the result wasn’t enough to calm the storm brewing in the stands.

Crowd turns hostile

The atmosphere had been simmering even before kick-off, with fans whistling the team bus upon arrival and jeering players during the warm-up. The tension reached boiling point after the final whistle, with hundreds of supporters gathering outside the main entrance to voice their frustration.

Police were forced to form a security cordon so the squad could board their coach safely - a rare measure as players would typically leave in their own motors. The team bus was parked directly at the stadium exit to facilitate a swift departure amid the growing unrest.

Targets of fan anger

The protests weren’t just limited to the pitch performance. Fans directed their anger at multiple targets:

  • Manager Carlos Corberán faced chants demanding his resignation
  • Players were branded “mercenaries” and told they “don’t deserve the shirt”
  • Owner Peter Lim received the customary criticism from supporters
  • Club director Javier Solís was also singled out by sections of the crowd

Relegation reality

This result leaves Valencia firmly in the drop zone, with the draw doing little to ease relegation fears. The equaliser, which came 13 minutes after Elche had taken the lead, provided only momentary relief in what’s becoming a proper nightmare season at Mestalla.

The toxic atmosphere follows Valencia’s defeat to Celta Vigo and reflects growing frustration with both on-pitch performances and off-field management. With Peter Lim’s ownership continuing to divide opinion, the club appears to be in danger of imploding just when unity is most needed for a relegation battle.
