Burgos come knocking for David López but Mallorca slam the door shut
Despite limited minutes this season, RCD Mallorca refuse to let promising young defender David López join Burgos CF on loan during the January transfer window.
Mallorca are playing hardball over their 22-year-old defender David López, rejecting loan approaches from Segunda División side Burgos despite the youngster’s limited playing time this season.
Warming the bench in Mallorca
It’s been a proper case of splinters in the backside for young David López this season. The towering 1.95m centre-back has barely had a sniff of first-team action, managing just 303 minutes across four appearances:
- Three Copa del Rey matches
- One La Liga appearance (62 minutes in the 1-0 defeat to Real Sociedad)
With numbers like that, you’d think Mallorca might be keen to ship him out on loan this January to get some much-needed minutes under his belt. But apparently not, my friends. Despite Burgos making a formal approach, the islanders aren’t having any of it.
The Burgos connection
This isn’t just any random club showing interest. López actually cut his professional teeth at Burgos last season (2024/25), where he was a proper fixture in the side:
- 17 Segunda División appearances
- 2 Copa del Rey matches
The lad clearly impressed both Jon Andoni Pérez ‘Bolo’ and Luis Miguel Ramis during his time there. But his loan spell was cut short in January 2025 when Jagoba Arrasate, Mallorca’s gaffer, requested his return to the Balearic club.
False promises
Here’s where it gets a bit Adam and Eve (believe): Arrasate claimed he needed López back because he had plans for him… only to then give him a measly two league appearances in the second half of the season. And that was when Mallorca were already safe as houses and even chasing European spots!
What next for the youngster?
For now, López – who’s contracted until 2027 – has no choice but to keep grafting away in training and hope for his chance to shine. Several Segunda División clubs have been sniffing around, but Mallorca are standing firm.
Despite barely featuring, the club clearly sees something in the Mallorcan defender that they’re not willing to let go. Whether that’s smart squad management or wasting a young talent’s development remains to be seen.
