Cañizares warns Lamine Yamal faces 'most difficult year' as fame changes everything
Former Spain goalkeeper Santiago Cañizares cautions Barcelona wonderkid about the challenges of his 'confirmation year' and adapting to life as a football celebrity.
Barcelona’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal may be riding high after Supercopa success against Real Madrid, but former Spain goalkeeper Santiago Cañizares believes the 18-year-old is entering the most challenging phase of his career despite his tender age.
The confirmation challenge
Speaking on COPE’s ‘El Partidazo’ program, Cañizares didn’t mince his words about what lies ahead for the Barça wonderkid:
“I believe Lamine Yamal is in the most difficult year of his career because it’s his confirmation year,” the former Valencia stopper explained. “He must confirm everything he did last year, which is very difficult because he shone at such a high level.”
The 56-year-old Cañizares, who earned 46 caps for Spain during his playing days, highlighted that this isn’t just about on-pitch performance but a complete life transformation.
Life in the fishbowl
According to Cañizares, Yamal faces a perfect storm of challenges:
- Managing new contracts and sponsorship deals
- Handling constant publicity demands and events
- Navigating dramatic social changes
- Dealing with newfound wealth
The goalkeeper-turned-pundit stressed that this transformation period has broken many promising talents before Yamal.
“I’ve seen great players struggle badly during this year,” Cañizares warned, explaining that the normal teenage life Yamal might crave is now impossible.
No going back
Cañizares dismissed the notion that young stars can maintain their pre-fame lifestyle, pointing out that society simply won’t allow it.
“You can’t keep being the same person,” he said. “You can no longer grab a beer here, drink a Coca-Cola there, or walk your dog in the park.”
The former Real Madrid and Valencia keeper painted a picture of how Yamal’s life has been turned upside down – from once getting calls from his bank manager about overdrafts to now being offered “13 investment funds with supposedly fantastic returns.”
After his breakout season and Euro 2024 heroics, all eyes will be on how the Barcelona phenom handles these Adam and Eve pressures (pressures = rhyming slang for “stresses”) while continuing to deliver the goods on the pitch.
