Eibar's Away Day Blues: Second-Worst First Half Road Record in Club History

Eibar have failed to win a single away match in their first 10 road trips this season, collecting just 3 points from a possible 30 in a dismal run of form.

Eibar have completed a first half of the season they’d rather forget on the road, with numbers that would make any travelling supporter reach for the hard stuff.

Dire Away Form

The Basque outfit wrapped up the first half of their campaign at El Plantío on Saturday with some properly grim reading in the away column. They’ve managed to reach January without a single victory in their 10 away fixtures, scraping together a measly 3 points from a possible 30.

These woeful numbers have earned them the dubious honour of being the worst away side in the entire Segunda División. The reaction they’ve been searching for on their travels for months now continues to elude them, resulting in their second-worst first-half away record in club history.

Historical Context

You’d have to go on a right old trip down memory lane - 69 years to be precise - to find a season where Eibar performed worse away from home by the halfway mark. During the 1956-57 campaign, they managed just a single point on their travels. Back then, the first half consisted of 19 matches, though they played the same number of away fixtures as this season.

Another couple of seasons match this year’s poor showing:

  • 1989-90: Also collected just 3 away points
  • 1993-94: Another 3-point first half away from home

The silver lining? In both those campaigns, Eibar managed to avoid the drop despite their away day nightmares, though they were in a proper relegation scrap for much of the season - not unlike their current predicament.

Looking Forward

San José’s men have shown glimpses of quality that deserved better results on some of their travels, but for various reasons, that elusive away victory has remained out of reach since their win against Granada last May 12th.

In a twist of fate that couldn’t be scripted better, Los Cármenes (Granada’s ground) will be the venue for Eibar’s first match of the second half of the season. The armeros will be desperate to find that away form that’s been missing in action since the campaign kicked off.
