From Castilla to the Big Time: Arbeloa Takes Madrid Reins

Former Real Madrid defender Álvaro Arbeloa has been appointed as the new first-team manager, replacing Xabi Alonso after a successful spell with Castilla.

Former Real Madrid defender turned youth coach Álvaro Arbeloa has landed the top job at the Santiago Bernabéu, completing a meteoric rise through the coaching ranks.

Rapid promotion

Arbeloa, who only took charge of Real Madrid Castilla (the club’s B team) in June 2025, has been promoted to the first team after just a few months in the role. During his brief tenure, he guided Castilla to fourth place in the table, putting them firmly in the promotion playoff spots before getting the call up to the big leagues.

The 43-year-old replaces fellow former Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso, who had been at the helm of Los Blancos. Talk about a proper baptism of fire – Arbeloa’s first match in charge will be Wednesday’s Copa del Rey clash away at Albacete. Expect his official unveiling at tomorrow’s pre-match press conference, where he’ll likely be trading his Castilla tracksuit for something a bit more Savile Row.

Made in Madrid

Arbeloa’s coaching journey has been entirely within the Real Madrid system since 2020:

  • 2020-21: Led the U14s (Infantil A) to league title
  • 2021-22: Managed the U16s (Cadete A)
  • 2022-25: In charge of the U19s (Juvenil A), winning an impressive treble in 2022-23 (Liga, Copa del Rey, Copa de Campeones) and another league title in 2024-25
  • June 2025-present: Castilla manager

Playing pedigree

As a player, Arbeloa was no Adam’s apple (rhyming slang for ‘mug’) either. He represented Real Madrid for seven seasons between 2009 and 2016, making 238 appearances and collecting an impressive trophy cabinet:

  • 2 Champions Leagues
  • 1 Club World Cup
  • 1 UEFA Super Cup
  • 1 La Liga title
  • 2 Copa del Rey trophies
  • 1 Spanish Super Cup

He was also part of Spain’s golden generation, earning 56 caps and winning the 2010 World Cup plus European Championships in 2008 and 2012.

For Madrid fans, the appointment represents another example of the club’s faith in promoting from within. After the success of Zidane and more recently with Raúl’s stint, the Bernabéu brass are clearly backing their former players to understand the club’s DNA. Whether Arbeloa can translate his youth success to the pressure cooker of the first team remains to be seen, but he’s got the Madrid pedigree in spades.
