Zaragoza equal worst-ever first half season tally, but hope springs eternal
Despite matching their lowest points haul in history for a first half campaign, Real Zaragoza's victory against the league leaders has sparked renewed optimism.
Despite equalling their worst-ever points tally for a first half season, Real Zaragoza’s stunning weekend victory against the table-toppers has breathed new life into their survival hopes, with safety now just three points away.
Record-equalling struggles
Victor Sellés’ men have limped to just 20 points from their first 21 matches, matching their previous low from 2021. The crucial difference this time around is their league position - while that 2021 side sat outside the relegation zone, the current crop find themselves second-bottom.
However, there’s a silver lining in that comparison. That 2021 team managed to rack up 30 points in the second half of the season to secure survival with 50 points overall - a blueprint the current side will be desperate to follow.
Transfer window salvation?
To pull off a similar escape act, Zaragoza desperately need reinforcements. The gaffer has been performing minor miracles with a paper-thin squad, but even he can’t keep pulling rabbits out of hats forever.
The club’s transfer business is expected to pick up pace from mid-January onwards, with several key movements on the horizon:
- Sebastian Kosa looks set to be the first departure
- Samed Bazdar also needs to find new digs
- Three priority positions targeted: centre-back, central midfielder and striker
While no new faces are expected for Saturday’s clash with Real Sociedad B, fans might see fresh blood for the Castellón match the following week.
Make or break moment
The club’s survival now rests squarely on the shoulders of the board - both their recruitment acumen and willingness to splash the cash will determine whether Zaragoza can avoid what would be a catastrophic relegation.
As one supporter put it at the weekend: “We’re not dead and buried yet.”
