Arbeloa backs Vinicius to dance: New Madrid boss makes his mark in first presser

Former defender takes the reins at Real Madrid following Xabi Alonso's departure, promising to prioritize winning while encouraging Vinicius to express himself on the pitch.

Álvaro Arbeloa has wasted no time setting out his stall as Real Madrid’s new gaffer, making it crystal clear he wants Vinicius Jr to express himself on the pitch.

New boss, familiar face

The 42-year-old former defender faced the press at Valdebebas for the first time since his promotion from Castilla, ahead of Wednesday’s Copa del Rey clash with Albacete. With Xabi Alonso’s departure still fresh, Arbeloa was quick to outline his vision for Los Blancos.

“I want him to dance and enjoy himself,” Arbeloa declared about Vinicius, immediately backing the Brazilian star who’s been the subject of much debate during Alonso’s tenure.

The appointment came at breakneck speed, with Arbeloa revealing: “Yesterday afternoon they told me they’d reached an agreement with Xabi and wanted me to take charge.” Despite the swift transition, he emphasized his friendship with Alonso remains intact.

Cantera credentials

Having spent 20 years at the club in various capacities, Arbeloa brings deep knowledge of Madrid’s academy system:

  • Described La Fábrica as “the best youth system in the world”
  • Emphasized that academy players “know the first team manager knows them better than anyone”
  • Confirmed he’ll be counting on youth talent going forward

The winning mentality

When asked about his playing philosophy, Arbeloa channeled his inner Luis Aragonés, avoiding stylistic labels and focusing on results:

“This club is about winning, winning, and winning again. It’s our DNA. That’s what’s led us to fill the trophy cabinet.”

He also couldn’t resist a cheeky dig at the media’s treatment of Madrid’s previous successes: “Madrid has more than a hundred years of history and it’s difficult for anyone to acknowledge when they’ve played well. Here we won three Champions Leagues in a row and people said it was because after training they went to water the garden.”

Mourinho influence with a twist

Arbeloa acknowledged José Mourinho’s influence on his coaching style but was adamant about forging his own path: “It was a privilege to train with him… He influenced me a lot, but if I wanted to be him, I would fail spectacularly. I am Arbeloa.”

With his first match in the dugout coming against Albacete in the Copa del Rey, the new boss has made it clear—this is a fresh start for everyone, but the Madrid principles remain unchanged. The players might be in for a right Bobby Moore (tour) of duty under their new gaffer, but at least Vini has the green light to keep dancing.
