Arbeloa's arrival could spark youth revolution at Real Madrid
After Xabi Alonso's disappointing tenure for La Fábrica, new boss Álvaro Arbeloa is set to give several Castilla prospects their big break at the Bernabéu.
With Xabi Alonso’s departure, Álvaro Arbeloa’s appointment has sparked fresh optimism among Real Madrid’s academy talents who felt overlooked during the previous regime.
La Fábrica’s new hope
Let’s not beat around the bush – there won’t be many tears shed at Valdebebas over Xabi’s exit. Despite initial excitement following Gonzalo’s inclusion at the Club World Cup, the academy quickly grew disillusioned with the former boss who rarely showed his face at the Di Stéfano to watch Castilla in action.
Arbeloa represents something entirely different. In six seasons coaching at various youth levels, he’s shown himself to be proper brave with youth integration. The numbers speak volumes – 22 of his 23 starting lineups at Castilla had an average age of just 19. Talk about putting your money where your mouth is!
The chosen ones
Several youngsters are absolutely buzzing about Arbeloa’s promotion. Beyond Gonzalo, who thrived under him in the 2022-23 Juvenil A campaign, there’s a core group of Castilla pearls ready to make the step up:
-
Thiago Pitarch - The 18-year-old midfielder is Arbeloa’s latest discovery. First called up to Juvenil A in January 2025, he was quickly promoted to Castilla and made a starter. His dynamism and personality perfectly match what Arbeloa wants from his midfielders.
-
Cestero - Once described by Arbeloa as “the best number 6 in Spain”, this is a player he trusts implicitly. Already debuted under Xabi against Talavera, Cestero combines defensive strength with exceptional ball-playing abilities.
-
César Palacios - A Benzema-esque forward who’s one of Arbeloa’s absolute favourites. His football intelligence and associative play make him a unique talent who sees spaces others don’t.
-
Manuel Ángel - Arbeloa’s captain at Castilla and a technical wizard capable of breaking opposition lines through dribbling or incisive passing. Has yet to receive a first-team call-up – something Arbeloa might change sharpish.
-
Joan Martínez - Perhaps Arbeloa’s greatest youth coaching success story. Plucked from Juvenil C straight to Juvenil A in 2023-24, he’s developed into one of La Fábrica’s most promising centre-backs despite some tough love from his manager this season.
The next wave
Beyond these five standouts, Arbeloa has his eye on several other promising talents:
- Fullbacks David Jiménez and Fortea offer attacking threat from deep
- Defensive utility men Valde and Aguado can play across the backline
- Winger Yáñez, who debuted under Ancelotti last season, offers dribbling ability and interior play
- Lamini Fati, a physically dominant centre-back
- Lezcano, dubbed the ‘new Nacho 2.0’ for his defensive versatility
For a club that’s spent a king’s ransom on new talent, it seems the real diamonds might have been in their backyard all along. Arbeloa knows it, and he’s ready to give the academy boys their chance to shine on the big stage.
