Arbeloa's Chiringuito confessions: 'I try to be as Mourinhista as possible'

Former Real Madrid defender and new manager Álvaro Arbeloa's most revealing moments from his appearances on El Chiringuito, including his relationships with Mourinho and Xabi Alonso.

Former Real Madrid defender turned manager Álvaro Arbeloa has never been one to hide his loyalties or mince his words during his appearances on Spanish football’s most notorious late-night show, El Chiringuito.

Mourinho’s disciple

Arbeloa, who recently took the reins at Real Madrid, has made no secret of his admiration for José Mourinho, under whom he played from 2010 to 2013. Back in 2017, he proudly declared himself a “Mourinhista” - a philosophy he described as “a way of doing things, always being straightforward, and not being afraid to be yourself.”

“I try to be as Mourinhista as possible,” the 42-year-old confessed during one of his appearances on Josep Pedrerol’s programme. This mindset appears to have followed him into his coaching career, suggesting Madrid fans might expect a touch of The Special One’s approach in his management style.

Brotherhood with Xabi Alonso

Interestingly, Arbeloa also spoke candidly about his relationship with Xabi Alonso - the man he’s replacing as Real Madrid manager. The pair shared dressing rooms for seven consecutive years between Liverpool and Madrid.

“We were almost brothers,” Arbeloa revealed about his fellow Spaniard, highlighting the deep connection between two men who’ve now both found themselves in the Madrid dugout, albeit at different times.

Understanding the Bernabéu faithful

When asked by Pedrerol why the Bernabéu crowd holds him in such high regard, Arbeloa demonstrated his understanding of what makes Madrid tick:

“The Bernabéu crowd has seen the best players in the world and values quality, but above all, they value effort and commitment. That’s what I believe is the foundation of our badge,” explained the defender who enjoyed two spells at the club (2004-2005 and 2009-2016).

Early Vinicius vision

Arbeloa’s eye for talent was evident back in 2019 when he expressed excitement about a young Brazilian who’s since become one of football’s brightest stars.

“Vinicius is very good,” he stated. “I’m excited about him. He seems like a very destabilising player and very brave.”

This early endorsement of Vini Jr shows Arbeloa’s ability to spot potential - a quality that should serve him well in his new role at the Santiago Bernabéu.
