Arbeloa's first presser: Mou questions, Zidane dig and a hint of what's to come

Former Madrid defender Álvaro Arbeloa showed his true colours in his first press conference as Real Madrid manager, mixing warmth with a few well-placed jabs.

Álvaro Arbeloa’s debut in front of the Madrid press corps has given us a proper glimpse of what to expect from the new gaffer – and it’s clear he won’t be keeping his trap shut when it matters.

Setting the tone

The former defender took a leaf straight out of Luis de la Fuente’s book, addressing each journalist by their first name – a small but significant touch that created an almost family-like atmosphere. Eye contact, personal connection – Arbeloa was marking his territory through warmth rather than distance.

Over 20 minutes and 18 questions, he showed he’s ready to play the media game his way.

The inevitable Mourinho question

It took until the 11th question for someone to mention the Portuguese elephant in the room. Arbeloa couldn’t help but crack a smile before the question was even finished.

“I was expecting this question,” he admitted, not running away from his connection to his former boss. Rather than dodge it, he embraced the link with good humour while making it clear he’s his own man.

The Zidane dig

Perhaps the most revealing moment came when discussing playing style. With a hint of sarcasm that would make a London cabbie proud, Arbeloa noted that in 123 years, Madrid has “never been recognised for playing well.”

Then came the subtle dig at his predecessor, pointing out that even when Zidane won three consecutive Champions League titles, “people said after matches he went to water his garden” – a clear reference to the infamous “Zidane’s flower” narrative suggesting the Frenchman’s success was down to luck rather than tactical nous.

It was delivered with a smile but had proper teeth to it. Arbeloa clearly remembers the lack of respect shown to Madrid’s football during the height of the Mourinho-Guardiola wars, which he experienced first-hand as a player.

Showing his cards

Interestingly, when baited about referees, Arbeloa refused to bite: “I haven’t played a single match yet and you’re already asking me about that,” he responded.

He showed genuine warmth when discussing Xabi Alonso and firmly backed Vinicius Jr., encouraging the Brazilian to “dance” and highlighting his Supercopa final performance as the standard he expects.

In just 20 minutes, Arbeloa revealed himself as a manager who’ll balance approachability with character – someone who’ll be friendly but won’t shy away from defending his club when needed. His second chapter begins tomorrow in Albacete, and it should be a right Bobby Dazzler.
