Carmona defiant as VAR controversy adds to Sevilla's woes
Sevilla defender José Ángel Carmona speaks out after another frustrating defeat, this time to Celta Vigo, as fan discontent grows at the Sánchez-Pizjuán.
Sevilla’s season continues to unravel as they slumped to another defeat, this time a 0-1 reverse against Celta Vigo at the Sánchez-Pizjuán, with defender José Ángel Carmona left fuming over VAR decisions and desperate to reassure increasingly restless supporters.
VAR frustrations mounting
The Andalusian side’s defender couldn’t hide his frustration at what he perceived as inconsistent VAR decisions that have plagued Sevilla this season. Carmona pointed to a contentious penalty that decided the match, suggesting there’s a pattern emerging against his team.
“Casually we’re the team most condemned by VAR actions,” Carmona noted, clearly brassed off with how quickly officials dismissed a potential penalty for Sevilla while confirming Celta’s spot-kick “in a second”.
The defeat marks another setback in what’s becoming a proper mare of a season for the Nervionenses, who also suffered a heavy 0-3 defeat to Levante recently.
Fan relations under strain
With boos ringing around the Sánchez-Pizjuán at full-time, Carmona attempted to mend the growing rift between players and supporters. The defender acknowledged fans’ disappointment but made a passionate plea for understanding:
“We’re professionals from head to toe,” he insisted, emphasizing that nobody in the dressing room wants to lose matches and the squad is giving their all in training.
The relationship between Sevilla’s faithful and the team appears increasingly strained, with patience wearing thin after multiple disappointing performances.
Attacking woes continue
Despite creating chances and putting numerous crosses into the box, Sevilla’s inability to find the back of the onion bag remains a significant concern. Carmona identified several issues with their attacking play:
- Not enough bodies in the box when crosses come in
- Lacking the final touch to convert chances
- Struggling to turn possession into meaningful opportunities
However, the defender remains confident that victories will come if they continue playing with the same intensity, though many supporters might need more convincing after yet another defeat on home turf.
