Eibar's season stalls as mid-term report shows worrying signs

With the worst first-half performance since their relegation in 2021, Eibar find themselves just one point above the drop zone as inconsistency plagues their campaign.

Sitting precariously just one point above the relegation zone after the first half of the season, Eibar’s campaign has been a proper dog’s dinner so far.

Mid-season blues

The Basque outfit have accumulated a measly 24 points from their opening fixtures - their worst tally since dropping down from La Liga in 2021. That’s four points fewer than they managed at the same stage last season, leaving them languishing in 16th position.

Initial optimism has faded faster than a cheap pair of jeans, with their away form proving particularly diabolical. If you thought last season’s road record was poor (5 points), this term they’ve somehow managed to sink even lower - yet to win a single away match and scraping together just 3 points from draws.

Home comforts

Ipurua Stadium remains Eibar’s sanctuary, where they’ve collected 21 points from a possible 33. Only Málaga and Ceuta boast better home records in the division. However, even this represents a slight decline from last season when they managed 23 points at the same stage.

Statistical mixed bag

The numbers paint an interesting picture:

  • Scoring three more goals than at this point last season
  • Improved xG of 1.48 (up from 1.31)
  • Rank 8th in Segunda for creating clear chances
  • Wasteful finishing - 7 goals fewer than their xG suggests they should have
  • Conceded 4 more goals than last season

Manager San José has been tinkering constantly, only fielding the same starting XI in consecutive matches twice all season. While possession stats remain similar to last term, their vulnerability from set-pieces has cost them dearly.

Looking ahead

With half the season gone, the “armeros” face an uphill battle to climb away from the relegation scrap. The foundations are there - they can create chances and Ipurua remains a fortress of sorts - but their shocking away form and wastefulness in front of goal need urgent attention if they’re to avoid a proper squeaky bum time in the second half of the campaign.
