Obeng legs it from Ceuta to sign for Albacete in search of playing time
Ghanaian forward Samuel Obeng has left AD Ceuta FC after limited opportunities, signing with Albacete until 2027 as he looks to revive his career in Segunda División.
Ghanaian striker Samuel Obeng has completed his departure from AD Ceuta, with Albacete Balompié swooping in to secure his services until 2027.
Seeking Minutes Elsewhere
Ceuta confirmed on Tuesday that Obeng requested to leave the club in search of more regular playing time. The Ghanaian forward had already made his intentions clear by refusing to travel with the squad for Sunday’s match against Málaga, despite having started the previous two fixtures while filling in for the injured Marcos Fernández.
The 27-year-old hasn’t wasted any time settling into his new surroundings, already training under Alberto González at Albacete’s Ciudad Deportiva Andrés Iniesta complex. Talk about hitting the ground running - he could potentially feature in Albacete’s upcoming Copa del Rey clash against the mighty Real Madrid.
Limited Role Under Romero
Obeng’s departure hardly comes as a shock to those following Ceuta’s campaign. The forward has struggled to nail down a regular spot in José Juan Romero’s plans this season, particularly after:
- The arrival of Marcos Fernández, who quickly established himself as the gaffer’s first-choice striker
- Being limited mostly to substitute appearances despite a dream debut when he scored the winner against Huesca back in matchday four
- Starting only when injuries forced Romero’s hand, as seen in recent victories against Real Sociedad B and Andorra
Striking Options Running Thin
With Obeng’s exit and Fernández still nursing a dodgy knee, Ceuta’s striking department is looking proper thin. Romero now has just Juanto Ortuño and new arrival Marc Domènech as recognised forwards, though he experimented with Kuki Zalazar as a false nine during the recent defeat in Málaga.
While Ceuta still have time in the transfer window to find a replacement for Obeng, their attention appears focused on securing the services of José Campaña - especially with Rubén Díez potentially sidelined for a month following his injury in Málaga.
