Sevilla's Perfect Storm: Almeyda's Men Sinking in Nervión Chaos

With four straight losses, a toothless attack, and institutional crisis looming, Sevilla FC finds itself trapped in a downward spiral that threatens their La Liga survival.

A club in freefall, Sevilla’s season continues to unravel with alarming speed as Matías Almeyda’s early-season magic fades into distant memory.

The Downward Spiral

Sevilla find themselves trapped in a proper nightmare at the moment. Four consecutive defeats, including an embarrassing Copa del Rey exit, have left the Andalusian side just three points clear of the relegation zone. The brief Almeyda bounce from September has well and truly fizzled out.

What’s particularly worrying is that unlike previous poor performances, the latest defeat wasn’t about attitude – it was about sheer incompetence. The problems are mounting faster than solutions can be found.

Toothless in Attack

The Nervión outfit are trying to bite with baby teeth. Their attacking approach – focusing on wing play with the emerging talent Oso providing rare glimpses of quality – simply isn’t creating meaningful chances.

The numbers tell a grim story:

  • Only scored in 3 of their last 8 matches since Rubén Vargas’ injury
  • Zero goals since Akor Adams departed for AFCON
  • Current number 9 Isaac Romero hasn’t scored in over three months

No wonder Almeyda is desperate for a new striker, stating plainly: “You win football with goals, and we haven’t been scoring them.”

Injury Crisis

The treatment room at Sevilla is busier than Piccadilly Circus at rush hour. Key players like César Azpilicueta, Gabriel Suazo and Rubén Vargas have all suffered serious injuries forcing extended absences.

The situation has become so dire that the club recently appointed Antonio Tramullas as new head of medical services, one of Spain’s most qualified sports medicine professionals. With such a limited squad, these absences are particularly damaging.

Transfer Market Struggles

The club needs to generate around €10 million in profit to balance the books, not including potential signings. This means a significant player sale is needed in the next fortnight.

Several players are potential departure candidates, including José Ángel Carmona, Juanlu Sánchez, and Rubén Vargas. Sporting director Antonio Cordón has managed to free up some squad space, but much work remains.

Institutional Crisis

As if on-pitch troubles weren’t enough, the club’s potential sale hangs over everything like a dark cloud. Fan protests against the current board are intensifying, with local businessmen Antonio Lappí and Fede Quintero positioning themselves as alternative leadership.

Bizarrely, reports emerged that Sergio Ramos is interested in taking control of the club, though the still-active player hasn’t commented publicly on this speculation.

Almeyda, now acting as the club’s de facto spokesperson, can only offer this promise: “This is the team we have, and as long as we’re breathing, we’ll keep fighting.”

With just 7 points from their last 33 available, that fighting spirit might be all they have left.
