Sporting hit with fresh blow as Gaspar Campos sidelined with ankle injury
Gijon's injury woes continue with key winger Gaspar Campos facing several weeks out after suffering a medium-grade ankle sprain during a recovery session.
Sporting Gijon’s challenging season takes another hit as influential winger Gaspar Campos is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines with an ankle injury, compounding the club’s recent struggles.
Injury Details
The Asturian club confirmed on Tuesday that Campos has suffered a medium-grade sprain to his left ankle, an injury that will keep him out of action for several weeks. The setback couldn’t come at a worse time for Sporting, who are already navigating a difficult patch in their Segunda División campaign.
The incident occurred during what should have been a routine recovery session last Saturday at Real Betis’ training facilities, following Sporting’s league clash with Cádiz. Talk about bad luck - injured during a recovery session! Campos was immediately sent for medical tests, which have now confirmed the extent of the damage.
Impact on the Squad
This is proper bad news for manager Borja Jiménez, who has heavily relied on Campos this season:
- The winger has featured in 20 matches so far this term
- Started 14 of those games
- Contributed 3 goals and 1 assist
Campos will definitely miss this Saturday’s fixture against Cultural Leonesa at Reino de León (16:15 kickoff), with his absence likely stretching well beyond that single match.
Double Blow for Sporting
To make matters worse, Sporting also announced they’ve lost Oscar Cortés, whose loan spell from Rangers has been terminated. The Colombian winger, who joined last summer, made just 8 appearances for the rojiblancos - 5 in the league and 3 in cup competitions.
Losing two attacking options in such quick succession will force Jiménez to reshuffle his pack. The gaffer’s got his work cut out for him now, no two ways about it. Sporting have already begun Campos’ rehabilitation process, but supporters will be hoping the club can perhaps dip into the January transfer market to bolster their attacking options.
