Endrick and Gonzalo's long-distance duel: Madrid's young guns firing from afar
With Endrick loaned to Lyon and Gonzalo starring for Real Madrid, the two youngsters are engaged in a fascinating battle for their future at the Bernabéu.
Real Madrid’s young strikers are now separated by over 1,000 kilometers, but their battle for a future at the Bernabéu has only intensified.
Talk about a right proper shootout! Madrid’s two brightest young forwards are now playing their football in different countries, but make no mistake – they’re still competing against each other in what’s shaping up to be a fascinating long-distance duel.
The separation that benefits both
The January window has seen Endrick shipped off to Lyon while Gonzalo García remains in Madrid – a move that could prove crucial for both players’ development. Sharing limited minutes wasn’t doing either of them any favors, and something had to give.
This separation was on the cards since summer, but circumstances delayed the inevitable:
- Endrick was recovering from a serious injury until late September
- Gonzalo’s unexpected explosion at the Club World Cup changed his trajectory
Now, with over 1,000km between them, both strikers have the chance to shine independently while still effectively competing for position in next season’s pecking order.
Gonzalo’s blistering form
With Endrick departing for France, injuries to Mbappé opened the door for Gonzalo – and blimey, has he taken his chance! The canterano has been absolutely mustard since stepping into the spotlight:
- Four goals in his last three starts
- A hat-trick against Betis
- Another goal in the Supercopa final against Barcelona
This takes his total Madrid tally to nine goals – five last season while still officially a Castilla player (one in Copa, four in the Club World Cup), plus four this campaign as a first-team member.
Endrick’s fresh start
The Brazilian needed a change of scenery after struggling for meaningful minutes (just 847 across 37 appearances last season, only eight as a starter). His Lyon debut couldn’t have gone better – scoring on his first outing and immediately winning over the French supporters.
Lyon boss Paulo Fonseca is already singing his praises, highlighting the Brazilian’s one-on-one ability, pace, and potential to thrive in quick attacking transitions. The Portuguese manager acknowledges Endrick isn’t at full fitness yet but believes he perfectly addresses the team’s offensive shortcomings.
The long game
This separation might be the making of both players. Gonzalo currently has the upper hand, having forced Endrick’s temporary exit through his own stellar performances. But the Brazilian’s loan move gives him the platform to develop without the immense pressure of the Bernabéu.
For Madrid fans, it’s win-win. Two exceptional talents developing simultaneously, with their progress easily tracked week by week. The question is – which one will return to pre-season in better nick for the 2026-27 campaign?
