Kembo ships off to Ibiza as Sporting's transfer exodus continues
Yann Kembo becomes Sporting Gijón's third January departure, joining UD Ibiza on loan without purchase option as the club struggles to make incoming transfers.
Sporting Gijón continue to clear the decks while their incoming transfer business remains stuck in first gear, with young French prospect Yann Kembo the latest to head for the exit door.
Third Time’s a Charm
After already waving goodbye to Cortés and Caicedo (both heading to Argentina’s Huracán), it’s now 23-year-old Kembo who’s packing his bags for a stint at UD Ibiza under Miguel Álvarez. The loan move doesn’t include a purchase option, suggesting Sporting still see potential in the Frenchman despite his lack of playing time.
Kembo, who’s contracted with Sporting until 2028, has barely had a sniff in the league this season. His only appearance came as a second-half substitute during Sporting’s visit to Castellón - hardly enough time to make an impression, is it?
Loan Logic
Both player and club have agreed that a change of scenery is the best solution. The hope is that Kembo can:
- Gain valuable experience in a competitive league
- Justify Sporting’s decision to promote him to the first team with a professional contract last summer
- Return as a more polished player ready to contribute
One-Way Traffic
While Sporting have been quick to show players the door, they’re having a mare when it comes to bringing new faces in. The club’s priority remains signing a striker to bolster Borja Jiménez’s attacking options, but the manager wouldn’t turn his boat race at two additional reinforcements:
- A wide attacker
- A central defender
Waiting for Answers
Fans might get some clarity on Thursday when new executive president José Riestra is expected to address these issues during Brian Oliván’s presentation. The left-back, who joined as a free agent in December, has already made his league debut while supporters wait for more fresh blood.
