Almería secure left-wing weapon as Jon Morcillo signs on

The Spanish Segunda División club has snapped up the talented winger from Albacete in a deal that could reach €1 million with add-ons.

Fresh from watching his Albacete teammates knock Real Madrid out of the Copa del Rey, Jon Morcillo has swapped the Carlos Belmonte for the Mediterranean coast, joining Almería in a deal that could prove a proper bargain.

Cutting edge for the flanks

Almería have moved swiftly to secure their second winter signing, bringing in the talented left winger on a long-term deal that runs until 2029. The transfer fee is reportedly around €500,000 fixed plus variables, potentially rising to €1 million based on promotion and appearance triggers.

The 26-year-old Athletic Bilbao academy product brings pace, skill and proven Segunda División productivity to the Andalusian outfit. Morcillo has been in fine fettle this season, contributing five goals and three assists while featuring in every match for Albacete.

Already a thorn in Almería’s side

The Rojiblancos know exactly what they’re getting - Morcillo was the bloke who ended their 14-match unbeaten run last season when he scored a brace against them at the Carlos Belmonte. His overall numbers from last campaign were equally impressive:

  • 8 goals
  • 6 assists
  • Consistent performances from the wing

Lezama pedigree

Morcillo’s development through Athletic’s famed Lezama academy gave him solid foundations. His career trajectory has seen him:

  • Help Athletic’s B team secure promotion to Segunda División
  • Play two seasons in La Liga with Athletic’s first team
  • Spend time on loan at Real Valladolid
  • Return to Athletic before moving to Amorebieta in Segunda
  • Shine at Albacete for the past season and a half

The new arrival will wear the number 7 shirt and comes with a release clause set at a whopping €40 million - standard practice for Spanish clubs but shows Almería are taking no chances with their new diamond geezer on the wing.

Morcillo should be available for selection immediately, potentially making his debut this Saturday against Deportivo La Coruña.
