Castellón's veteran defender Oscar Gil packs his bags for Murcia
The 30-year-old centre-back ends his three-and-a-half year stint with Castellón, joining Real Murcia after falling down the pecking order this season.
Castellón have confirmed their first departure of the January transfer window, with experienced defender Oscar Gil making the switch to Real Murcia after seeing his playing time significantly reduced this season.
End of an era
The 30-year-old centre-back brings down the curtain on three-and-a-half seasons with the Albinegros, during which he played a crucial role in their promotion to Segunda División and subsequent survival in Spain’s second tier. Gil had been a proper stalwart for Castellón both on the pitch and in the dressing room, establishing himself as one of the team’s leaders.
From regular starter to bench warmer
However, Gil’s standing at the club took a significant knock midway through last season when he suffered a nasty jaw injury that kept him sidelined for three months. Since then, it’s been a bit of a ‘mare for the defender:
- Struggled to regain his place after returning from injury
- Despite signing a one-year contract extension last summer, he’s barely had a look-in
- Made just three appearances in the first half of this season, including a Copa del Rey run-out against Antoniano
Dropping down for minutes
Faced with the prospect of more splinters from the bench, Gil has opted to seek regular football elsewhere. He’ll be plying his trade in the Primera RFEF (Spain’s third tier) with Real Murcia, where he’ll be hoping to get his career back on track with consistent playing time.
For Castellón, it marks the departure of a player who’s been through the ups and downs with them, but football waits for no man, as they say in the East End.
