Costas inks new deal: Oviedo stalwart commits until 2028

Spanish second-tier side Real Oviedo secure the future of defensive rock David Costas with contract extension, marking his 150th appearance milestone.

Oviedo have tied down one of their most influential players as central defender David Costas puts pen to paper on a new deal that keeps him at the Tartiere until 2028.

Defensive rock extends stay

The timing couldn’t be more fitting for the Galician centre-back, who’s just celebrated his 150th official appearance for the club - a proper milestone that speaks volumes about his importance to the Asturian outfit.

Costas isn’t just your bog-standard defender, though. He brings leadership qualities that make him respected throughout the club - from the changing room to the dugout and up into the stands. Only injuries have kept him out of the starting eleven during his time at Oviedo; when he’s been fit as a fiddle, he’s been absolutely crucial to the team’s defensive setup.

A special connection

The relationship between Costas and Oviedo has that special something about it. His first stint at the Tartiere came back in the second half of the 2015-16 campaign, when he arrived on loan. That brief period clearly left its mark on both parties.

The connection was rekindled in 2021 when he returned on a permanent basis as a free agent, beginning a period of stability that will now extend to seven and a half seasons wearing the blue shirt.

Defensive partnership

For several seasons, Costas formed one of Segunda División’s most reliable centre-back partnerships alongside Dani Calvo, providing the team with security and continuity at the back. While muscle problems have occasionally limited his availability, they’ve never cast any doubt on his importance to the club.

Last weekend marked Costas’s 150th appearance for Oviedo, cementing his status as one of the most representative players in the club’s recent history. Fans wasted no time in celebrating on social media, showing their appreciation for a player who, despite being born in Galicia, has become part of the Carbayón family.

With this new deal, Oviedo have secured the backbone of their defence for the foreseeable future. In a division where consistency is worth its weight in gold, keeping hold of experienced performers like Costas could be crucial to their long-term ambitions.
