Mingueza's Celta future in doubt as Juventus circle for free transfer

Barcelona academy product Óscar Mingueza looks increasingly likely to leave Celta Vigo when his contract expires, with Juventus leading the chase for his signature.

Despite manager Claudio Giráldez’s optimism about a new deal just last month, Óscar Mingueza appears to be edging closer to the Balaídos exit door with Juventus now firmly in the picture.

Contract talks hit the buffers

Celta Vigo have been locked in negotiations with the versatile defender for months, but the two sides remain poles apart on terms. The Galician outfit simply can’t compete with the financial muscle of Europe’s elite clubs who have begun circling like sharks since Mingueza entered the final six months of his deal.

While Celta insist they haven’t thrown in the towel yet, the club acknowledges they’re fighting an uphill battle to retain a player who’s become a cornerstone of Giráldez’s setup. The gaffer and Mingueza share a proper tight relationship, which had given the club some hope of an extension.

Juventus leading the charge

The Turin giants have emerged as the most aggressive suitor for the 27-year-old’s signature, though they’re far from the only interested party. Since January 1st, Mingueza has been free to negotiate pre-contract terms with foreign clubs, putting Celta at a significant disadvantage.

The Old Lady and other potential destinations can offer wages that would absolutely dwarf anything Celta could put on the table - a reality the Galicians have reluctantly come to accept.

Barcelona to benefit

Interestingly, should Celta decide to cash in during the January window rather than lose him for nothing in summer, Barcelona would be entitled to 50% of any transfer fee - another complication in an already tricky situation. This financial wrinkle makes a winter sale even less appealing for Celta.

Spanish international making his mark

Since arriving in Vigo three and a half years ago, Mingueza has been an absolute diamond for Celta, making 123 appearances across all competitions. The Barcelona academy graduate has contributed 7 goals and established himself as one of the team’s most consistent providers of assists.

His club form earned him regular call-ups to Luis de la Fuente’s Spain squad until recently - further evidence of how much he’s come on leaps and bounds at Balaídos.

Contingency plans

While losing Mingueza would be a proper kick in the teeth, Celta believe they have decent cover in Sergio Carreira and Javi Rueda. Nevertheless, the club acknowledges they’d need to dip into the market for reinforcements should the Catalan complete his expected departure.
