Piqué revives Arbeloa feud with cheeky Copa del Rey jibe

Former Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué couldn't resist taking a dig at his old rival Álvaro Arbeloa after Real Madrid's shock Copa del Rey defeat to Albacete.

The long-running beef between Gerard Piqué and Álvaro Arbeloa shows no signs of cooling off as the Barcelona legend couldn’t resist a cheeky dig following Real Madrid’s embarrassing Copa del Rey exit.

Piqué’s WhatsApp banter

Following Real Madrid’s shock 3-2 defeat to Albacete in what was Arbeloa’s managerial debut, Piqué wasted no time in stirring the pot. The former Barcelona centre-back apparently messaged the Kings League presidents’ WhatsApp group with a simple but pointed “Buen debut 3-2” (Good debut 3-2).

The message was revealed during a Kings League stream by Spursito, who seemed rather chuffed about Piqué’s mischief-making, suggesting it should be headline news across the globe.

Madrid supporter DjMaRiio wasn’t having any of it though, firing back with some choice words about the retired defender.

A rivalry for the ages

This latest chapter is just another installment in what’s been a proper barnstormer of a feud dating back to the peak Clásico years when Guardiola and Mourinho were in the dugouts. The pair have been at each other’s throats for donkey’s years:

  • In 2015, Piqué delivered his now-infamous line about Arbeloa being “just an acquaintance” rather than a friend
  • Arbeloa previously suggested Piqué would end up as a comedian talking about Madrid
  • The Madrid man later stated he wouldn’t even have dinner with his Barcelona rival

No love lost

The timing of Piqué’s dig is particularly spicy given this was Arbeloa’s first match in charge. Talk about kicking a man when he’s down! The former Madrid defender’s coaching debut turning into a proper nightmare against lower-league opposition was apparently too tempting an opportunity for Piqué to pass up.

While both players have hung up their boots, it’s clear the Barcelona-Madrid rivalry continues to bubble away nicely between these two. Some things in Spanish football never change - and this ongoing beef between the pair might just be one of the most entertaining sideshows in La Liga’s recent history.
