Sellés feeling the love at Zaragoza despite relegation battle

Zaragoza boss Rubén Sellés discusses team spirit after big win against the leaders, injury updates, and potential transfer activity in the January window.

After masterminding a stunning victory against the league leaders, Real Zaragoza manager Rubén Sellés is riding a wave of positivity despite his side still battling in the relegation zone.

Feeling the love

The Valencia-born gaffer is clearly chuffed with the backing he’s received from the Zaragoza faithful since taking the reins. Following their impressive away day at Santander, Sellés is keen to bottle that atmosphere for their upcoming home fixture.

“The atmosphere in Santander was extraordinary,” he remarked, hoping that same energy transfers to Saturday’s clash with Real Sociedad B.

Sellés believes the victory against the table-toppers proves his squad can mix it with anyone in Segunda División, but consistency remains the key challenge. The boss is demanding his lads maintain “good or exceptional” performance levels week in, week out if they’re to climb away from danger.

Injury concerns

The treatment room at Zaragoza continues to be busier than the Northern Line at rush hour, with Sellés providing several fitness updates:

  • Radovanovic faces a spell on the sidelines, expected to be out for three to six weeks
  • Keidi and Insua have returned to normal training alongside Akouokou and Pau Sans
  • Aguirregabiria remains touch and go for the weekend fixture

Transfer talk

With the January window in full swing, Zaragoza are looking to strengthen their squad for the relegation dogfight ahead. Sellés confirmed they’ve freed up Kosa’s registration slot and are working to complete some deals in the second half of the transfer window.

Regarding Dani Gómez and Samed Bazdar, Sellés maintained they remain part of his plans despite ongoing speculation. He noted that Dani continues working to make an impact either as a starter or from the bench, while Bazdar’s situation could potentially change depending on market developments.

Versatile Saidu

When quizzed about Saidu’s best position, Sellés described him as a “universal player” capable of performing across multiple positions. While he’s been deployed at centre-back recently, the manager believes he can be equally effective in midfield, with teammates trusting his abilities regardless of where he plays.

Zaragoza will be hoping to build on their momentum when they host Real Sociedad B this Saturday as they look to climb out of the relegation zone.
