Setién spills the beans on Barça differences: 'Flick's kids are loving it'

Former Barcelona boss Quique Setién contrasts his Camp Nou tenure with Hansi Flick's rejuvenated squad, highlighting the joy factor of today's youthful team.

Former Barcelona manager Quique Setién has offered a candid assessment of the differences between his time at the Catalan giants and Hansi Flick’s current reign, suggesting the German boss has a significant psychological advantage with his squad of hungry youngsters.

Youth revolution transforming Barcelona

Speaking to Radio MARCA’s La Tribu programme, Setién didn’t mince his words when comparing eras at Camp Nou. The Cantabrian coach pointed to the stark contrast in squad profiles as the defining difference between his tenure and Flick’s impressive start.

“Ahora tiene chavales muy jóvenes, con un futuro enorme por delante,” Setién explained, highlighting how Flick’s Barcelona features players who haven’t yet won major honours and are still on their upward trajectory. This creates a completely different atmosphere than what he encountered.

The emotional state of the players seems to be what Setién believes makes all the difference. According to the former Las Palmas boss, today’s Barcelona squad simply enjoys playing football more – they’re happier and more motivated when stepping onto the pitch.

Madrid will bounce back, says Setién

When the conversation turned to Real Madrid’s recent struggles, Setién urged patience, noting that Los Blancos are experiencing a difficult period marked by:

  • Multiple injuries disrupting squad balance
  • Growing doubts after disappointing results
  • The natural adjustment period following coaching changes
  • Psychological challenges when confidence drops

However, he remained adamant that Madrid’s current dip is merely cyclical, predicting they’ll eventually return to their customary levels of performance. That’s just how football works in his book.

Personal reflections

On a personal note, Setién appears content with his current break from management. The 65-year-old is using his time away from the dugout to read, travel, and reconnect with old friends – though he emphatically rejected any suggestion he’s fallen out of love with football.

“The beautiful game has given me everything,” he insisted, revealing he still plays casual matches to maintain his connection with the sport. While comfortable in his current situation, Setién acknowledged the managerial itch might return, admitting: “I know myself – the bug will bite again.”
