Arbeloa calls for Bernabéu backing as Madrid prepare for Levante test
New Real Madrid boss Álvaro Arbeloa takes responsibility for Copa del Rey exit, confirms Mbappé's return to the squad, and outlines his vision for the team going forward.
Álvaro Arbeloa has fronted up to the media ahead of Real Madrid’s crucial La Liga clash with Levante, urging the Bernabéu faithful to stand by the team despite their shock Copa del Rey exit.
Taking responsibility
After Madrid’s embarrassing cup elimination against Albacete, Arbeloa was quick to shoulder the blame rather than point fingers elsewhere.
“I understand that people look for culprits, but I work to find solutions,” the new gaffer explained, showing proper leadership in his first real crisis at the helm.
Arbeloa’s approach has been notably hands-on since taking the reins, reportedly arriving at Valdebebas training ground at the crack of dawn to put in the hours needed to right the ship.
Team news boost
In a significant boost for Los Blancos, Arbeloa confirmed that Kylian Mbappé has recovered sufficiently to make the squad for Saturday’s match, though Rodrygo remains unavailable as he continues his recovery.
The boss also spoke glowingly about Jude Bellingham, highlighting the Englishman’s class and importance as one of the team’s natural leaders. Meanwhile, he described Fede Valverde as the embodiment of “madridismo” and the spirit of club legend Juanito – proper praise, that.
Vision for the future
Arbeloa outlined his tactical philosophy, emphasising his desire for mobility, positional interchanges, and attacking intent:
“I want a team that goes out to win from minute one, with no doubt that we’re going for the opponent’s goal. I want to transmit that beyond the football idea we’re going to be working on. I want a team that shows passion and excitement.”
The former defender also made a passionate plea to the Bernabéu crowd, acknowledging their disappointment but reminding them of their crucial role in the club’s historic comebacks.
“I understand that fans are hurt and disappointed, but I’m going to ask them to support their players. The great achievements have been accomplished when the Bernabéu has backed its players.”
Defence of academy players
In a particularly spirited moment, Arbeloa defended the club’s youth players who featured in the Albacete defeat, stating: “I’ve also read many criticisms of the academy players, and you’ll always find me against that because Madrid’s academy is the best in the world.”
With the league title still very much up for grabs, all eyes will be on how Madrid respond to their cup disappointment when they take to the pitch on Saturday night.
